In the summer of 1960, Dr. John L. Coker, Jr., having been in practice in Jacksonville for one year following his residency in Oral Surgery in Philadelphia, moved to Gainesville to set up practice. At that time, there were no dental specialists in Oral Surgery in the Gainesville area, and he was received with some trepidation as the local dentists had been doing most of their own surgery. They would have referred difficult cases to Jacksonville. Because of that, Dr. Coker felt there was a need for a good oral surgeon in Gainesville, Florida, and he was certainly ready to fill that need with great capability.
He practiced alone for 12 years until Dr. Randall B. Caton joined his practice in July of 1972. Drs. Coker and Caton practiced together for 11 years until Dr. Coker’s retirement in 1983. Just prior to his retirement, Dr. Cesar Keathley, a graduate at the University of Florida and Oral Surgery Residency at the University of Virginia in Richmond, joined the practice for one year. He left to open his practice in Clearwater, Florida. After being in solo practice for a number of years after that, Dr. Caton was joined by Dr. Robert Fox in 1989. Dr. Fox left to create his own practice in 1992. Dr. Caton practiced alone, opening a new office in the Crown Pointe office complex in 1996. In 1998, Dr. Glenn N. Taylor, Jr. (best known as JR) joined Randy Caton in the practice of surgery. Dr. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and experience from his very wonderful training at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In the late ’70s and early ’80s, the name of the specialty was changed from Oral Surgery to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This name change better describes the scope of our practice which includes the entire upper and lower jaw regions, jaw joints, and sinuses.
JR and Randy have been privileged to be partners together since 1998 and have been blessed to bring Oral Surgery services to the Gainesville and surrounding areas.

Dr Ratliff and his nurse Nikki and Alexandra were fantastic. We saw Dr Ratliff and Alexandra for my daughter's wisdom teeth consultation. Dr Ratliff was great and made my daughter feel relaxed and comfortable. Alexandra was super nice and sweet. She thoroughly explained what to expect, how to prepare, and went over the estimate and finance options. We were given a nice packet that went over everything, which is super helpful. They called in her pain meds for after surgery so that we could pick it up before surgery day so we wouldn't have to drive around and get it filled after the procedure. They also prescribed a anxiety medication for her to take before the procedure. My daughter was super nervous and this really helped the day of. We saw Dr Ratliff and Nikki for the wisdom teeth extraction surgery. Nikki was amazing, she has a very calming presence, she was great at explaining the whole process and after care process. Dr Ratliff is super kind and has an excellent bedside manner. He is great at what he does. Her procedure was less than an hour for all 4 wisdom teeth. Dr Ratliff explained how things went and what to expect. My daughter had very limited pain or swelling and is healing great. The ladies at the front desk are super friendly, nice and helpful. Dr. Taylor is the only oral surgeon I’ll ever use. He is incredibly nice, great bedside manners, and really cares for his patients. His entire staff is alway very friendly. I’ve never had an issue checking in or out. I’ve always been called back right on time for my appointments without having to wait long. I recently had to have a procedure and everything went smoothly. I am a little nervous about IVs and Dr. Taylor did a great job with that, and his girls were so comforting. The staff relayed all my after care to my boyfriend in great detail since I was not fully awake from the procedure. That made recovery at home easy by having everything I needed. Overall my experiences have been great and I’ve been a patient of Dr. Taylor’s since I was 11. I recommend him and his staff for any of your oral surgeon needs.
