Patient Information

In the summer of 1960, Dr. John L. Coker, Jr., having been in practice in Jacksonville for one year following his residency in Oral Surgery in Philadelphia, moved to Gainesville to set up practice. At that time, there were no dental specialists in Oral Surgery in the Gainesville area, and he was received with some trepidation as the local dentists had been doing most of their own surgery. They would have referred difficult cases to Jacksonville. Because of that, Dr. Coker felt there was a need for a good oral surgeon in Gainesville, Florida, and he was certainly ready to fill that need with great capability.

He practiced alone for 12 years until Dr. Randall B. Caton joined his practice in July of 1972. Drs. Coker and Caton practiced together for 11 years until Dr. Coker’s retirement in 1983. Just prior to his retirement, Dr. Cesar Keathley, a graduate at the University of Florida and Oral Surgery Residency at the University of Virginia in Richmond, joined the practice for one year. He left to open his practice in Clearwater, Florida. After being in solo practice for a number of years after that, Dr. Caton was joined by Dr. Robert Fox in 1989. Dr. Fox left to create his own practice in 1992. Dr. Caton practiced alone, opening a new office in the Crown Pointe office complex in 1996. In 1998, Dr. Glenn N. Taylor, Jr. (best known as JR) joined Randy Caton in the practice of surgery. Dr. Taylor brought a wealth of knowledge and experience from his very wonderful training at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In the late ’70s and early ’80s, the name of the specialty was changed from Oral Surgery to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This name change better describes the scope of our practice which includes the entire upper and lower jaw regions, jaw joints, and sinuses.

JR and Randy have been privileged to be partners together since 1998 and have been blessed to bring Oral Surgery services to the Gainesville and surrounding areas.

Got 4 teeth extracted with no issues! I was nervous coming in to get the operation done, but everyone was very friendly, made me feel at home, and got the operation done in a very quick process. Highly recommend! Dr. Ratliff is awesome.

Long review but nothing but great things to say! I have had some discomfort with my jaw since having my wisdom teeth extracted 15 years ago. The past few years I’ve had clicking noise but nothing terrible. My dentist recommended a night guard, I tried Botox, I tried the jaw bra at night, I saw my chiropractor (who is wonderful for other things but was a little skeptical to adjust my jaw as he was concerned it was more than he could “fix”), I also tried cervical neck pillows for night time & nothing helped. Over the past few months my jaw started locking shut while halfway open (and got to the point I could no longer adjust it myself), eating was painful & I decided to finally see a maxillofacial surgeon for further recommendation for treatment. I have seen many friends recommend Taylor & Ratliff for wisdom teeth extractions in the past, & after other offices stating it would be 5-6 months before they could see me, I lucked out by remembering the name of this office. I am so thankful because they were able to get me in for a consult within one month (that was with Christmas & New Year holidays in between). Everyone from the front office staff, to the assistants (Katie was so reassuring and sweet, despite my initial nerves), and most importantly Dr. Taylor were so very nice! Dr. Taylor listened without rushing me, explained everything very thoroughly & I loved his conservative approach the most. We decided to start with the arthrocentesis and if it doesn’t bring the level of success we hope, we will try the arthroscopy, but I am so relieved that will be the extent of any procedures needing to be performed to heal my painful jaw. I just had my arthrocentesis yesterday (only one week after my consult & mainly due to my personal work schedule) so I still need time to heal and see how things worked, but I am so amazed at how easy it was! I arrived early because I was nervous & wanted to sign any papers/pay before taking pre-op meds because I knew I am very much a light weight when it comes to medications like that. They were so kind about that & allowed me to do that, and even took me back almost immediately (even being an hour early). I felt very safe during my procedure, as they went over everything again with me. Katie had me all hooked up to monitor vitals, asked if I had any questions before they started and made sure I was comfortable). Dr. Taylor himself started my IV and listened to my concern about how I can’t handle a lot of anesthesia, so he gave me a tiny dose so I would see how I felt with it (and honestly I can’t remember much after that) but I do remember seeing it truly wasn’t the whole dose, so that was very considerate of him. I was obviously loopy and tired when I woke up, but I came home & slept a few hours & then felt like myself. Dr. Taylor prescribed me pain medications to take after the procedure if needed, but ice packs and Tylenol once (from the pain in my ear on the side my jaw bothers me anyway- so nothing new) is all I’ve used. My swelling is minimal today and so is any bruising where my small bandaids were located. I am very hopeful that this procedure will be successful, but in the event we have to do another, I know I am in great hands & could not have asked for a better team to take care of me. I highly recommend Dr. Taylor and his team for any maxillofacial surgery needs!
